Abbey National group was formed when Abbey Road Building
Society and National Building Society merged in 1944.
In 1989 Abbey floated and bacame a PLC. They then merged
with National and Provincial building society in 1996
increasing their customer base. The name Abbey was introduced
to represent the group in 2003
